Swimming
— To My Poetry Pal Yang Zongze
I flatter myself as a good swimmer
Like a magic scaled dragon in the sea
Only to find out that Zongze my pal
Is much better than I ever could be
A youthful swimmer in Yangjiawan Bay
Later thrashed in the Moon-Setting River
Challenging the waves like a sharpbelly
In the background of willows willowy
When schooling in Jinan, the Capital
Zongze swam at greater ease and better
When striving to cross the Yellow River
He stirred awe in many an onlooker
Once he dared to swim at the Yellow Sea
With other heroes in his company
Breaking through the shark prevention net
By no shark at all in his sight to be met 52
Nowadays, we are both advanced in age
Yet passion still burning as if with rage
Now and then I try to bathe in the ocean
Only to fall head over heels often
Upon Seeing Xu Hongju Drink Tea Alone during Our Video Chat
In May, at Lesser Fullness occurring
I see you alone sipping tea in glee
Outside iris knows the fun of sipping
Chinese milk vetch opens petals newly
There’s more than one who understands tea 1
You, my friend are an immortal earthly
Dreaming about Mountain Yuntai yestreen 2
Wishing for freedom in nature serene
Notes:
1. Here “one” (one person,一人) refers to Lu Yu in the Song Dynasty who authored The Classic of Tea.
2. This line is quoted from “Travelogue of Mountain Yuntai” written by Xu Hongju.
Ballad about Skinning a Hare on the Lantern Festival
Lantern Festival morning found me reading
And my wife ordering me to do something 56
The mountain hare must be skinned today
And she’d cook a meat dish for this holiday
I followed her order and hung the hare high
Holding in hand ready a sharp-bladed knife
Suddenly I saw the hare in my mind’s eye
Roaming and rambling freely all its life
Now drinking from the valley spring it passed by
Now nibbling grasses by the riverlet 57
By chance it triggered a trap the hunter set
And thus breathed its last breath on the very site
I happen to have a close relative who
Treks along the gully and ravine at night
Using electric wire to shock the hare
Regardless of rain, wind, frost or icy air
Once or twice he gives us a hare for free
Though one could fetch him 100 RMB
I imagine its tragic death, skinning the hare
Tasting the dish of its meat? I cannot bear
Recently I’ve heard about a mountain guy
His live electric wire killed a passer-by
I would like to give a word: hunters, pray thee
Please be kind-hearted and let all your prey free
Now nibbling grasses by the riverlet,用nibble模拟野兔小口吃草的悠然可爱情态。
Thoughts on the Sale of Cicadas Caught by a Country Fella at Night
Latent beneath gaining strength for many a year
Who’d expect to be caught the moment they appear
May my word of admonition get catchers’ ear:
Let chirpy cicadas free on perches higher
Mother Earth gives birth to all creatures big or small
They by rights are equal as well as compatible
Don’t search cicadas for a penny, almost naught
Good or bad is a matter of a single thought
